The 2022 early summer Learning Gardens training field day is designed to create a space where current, previous, and onboarding LG interns can interact with nature while learning and reviewing critical gardening tools, techniques, and etiquette. John Dorr Nature Laboratory is a 320 acre campus of fields, streams, and ponds in which students can explore nature and engage in outdoor pursuits. The John Dorr Nature Laboratory operates with the premise that it is vital to life on Earth to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the world around us. The Dorr educational philosophy also incorporates the idea that self-esteem is a critical determinant of an individual’s growth. Our ultimate goal is to provide an environment where students can be honest about their feelings, careful in their thinking, and responsible for their actions through their interactions with the natural world and with each other. The Dorr experience demonstrates that community cannot be imposed but must grow out of experience; that it is a result of working together and relying on one another.
Schedule:
8AM - 10AM
Participating students are expected to arrive at the bus at 8:00 am June 18th.
Pick up location: Horace Mann School located at 231 W 246th St, Bronx, NY 10471.
From our pick up location we will drive approximately 1.5 hours to John Dorr Nature Laboratory located at 121 Carmel Hill Rd N, Bethlehem, CT 06751.
10AM - 12PM
Arrival: Welcome to John Dorr Nature Laboratory: Meet the staff and tour the facility. Have lunch with the learning gardens team.
12-PM - 3PM
Rural Community gardens tour: Explore what a community garden looks like outside of New York City.
3PM - 5PM
Garden tool and etiquette training: students will go over common tools to be used at the garden. Learning Gardens staff will go over rules and expected behavior for working in the garden spaces.
5PM - 6PM
Dinner
6PM
Departure home. Students will board the school bus back to Horace Mann School located at 231 W 246th St, Bronx, NY 10471.
